Teacher Harry: *kicks open the door to his classroom*
Harry: STREET SMARTS!
Harry: You learned hundreds of ways to kill people by the time you finished your first year. The next step is being aware of the weapon you wield with every basic charm, and how to use them to your advantage.
One of the most basic examples is a levitation charm. This was one of the first spells taught to you and guess what? It doesn’t have a height or weight limit. You could levitate a grown man a hundred stories up and simply release. Can anyone else think of any?
students: *many hands raise bc they’re like 13*
Minerva: *cracks open a bottle of firewhisky*
Minerva: *pounds down half the bottle*
Minerva: *deep breath*
Minerva: STOP TEACHING TEENAGERS HOW TO KILL PEOPLE
Harry: Shan’t.

On October 31, 1981, the evil wizard Voldemort killed James and Lily Potter but failed to kill their one-year-old child Harry. The giant Haggrid collected the child and handed him over to the master wizard Dumbledore. Dumbledore in turn handed the child over to his non-wizard relatives the Dursleys to raise him. McGonagall: I don't know how you found out about the Stone, but rest assured, no one can possibly steal it, it's too well protected.
Harry: But since three 11 year-olds were able to find out about it, maybe we should re-examine that?
McGonagall: Nah.

Harry Potter: 10 years late
When the Harry Potter craze really took off, I was certainly in the right age-range, but I was not very interested. Through much of middle and high school, I stuck to reading realistic fiction and mostly stayed away from fantasy.
My husband, on the other hand, was soaking up every second as each book was released then the movies. I am finally catching up! I’m reading the books and watching the movies as I finish each book.
I recently finished the first book and watched the first movie and decided to keep track of my journey, if only for myself and the sake of reflection.
The Sorcerer/Philosopher’s Stone I very much enjoyed the book. I already knew small things about the series like Harry’s aunt, uncle, and cousin are terrible, Harry doesn’t know he is a wizard, there’s a tall hairy guy, Dumbledore, the 4 houses, etc....basic things anyone with the internet would know. Reading picked up for me once making it to Hogwarts. That said, I did really admire the beginning of the book. It helped me understand some of how Harry has had to grow up and thus Harry as a character.  I love Hagrid so much. The second he walked in to the story, I was sold. His nurturing ways are amazing and only further highlighted later in the book when he is raising Norbert. There really aren’t many characters I completely dislike. I know Snape isn’t all “bad” or necessarily bad at all based on some things I’ve been exposed to media-wise, but there is just a mystery about him. I was definitely going along with Harry, Ron, and Hermione’s theory on him throughout the story nonetheless. I was VERY surprised to find Prof. Quirrell at the end.
Now the movie. It was great! I was nit-picky throughout with small details like “didn’t Dudley have friends at the zoo?,” “that’s not how the conversation on the train went,” and “the presents were at the foot of their beds, not in the common room,” etc. These changes did not ruin anything for me, of course. I have seen worse movie remakes of books. *cough* Divergent *cough* There were a few differences that did bother me, however. The whole ordeal with Norbert was shortened--which I understand for movie purposes--however, it changed enough that Neville was not in detention. Neville did not have a big enough part in the movie to me. I mean, he was highlighted enough that we get the gist of him, but there were some moments I thought important that were not included. Specifically, some moments when he was being bullied and encouraged to stand up to bullies by Harry--advice he later put into practice against Draco and his crew as well as Harry (which we do see in the movie). There was also one teeny tiny bit I wanted in the movie simply for the Fred and George sweater joke. We didn’t even see Fred and George during Christmas. Fine, I guess. The journey to the stone itself and getting through all of the professor’s protective rooms/spells was my favorite part of the book, so naturally I was very critical of it. First, they didn’t even have Hagrid’s flute gifted to Harry in the book at Christmas, so they hardly had to really deal with Fluffy despite knowing how to calm him. The plant scene still involved Hermione using her knowledge to help the others. HOWEVER, it skipped “but there’s no wood” and that was such a great moment in the book. The key room also played out a bit differently, but I’m not too bothered. The troll room was not included, and I only think this is important because it was Professor Quirrell’s room. The chess game scene was wonderful. I LOVE this moment and what it shows us of Ron’s character. I don’t love how in the movie Harry saw the move to be made before Ron announced it, but fine. PROFESSOR SNAPE’S ROOM WAS NOT INCLUDED AND I AM UPSET. That was such an important moment for Hermione as well as Snape! They are brilliant and we didn’t get it. Boo.
Nonetheless, I enjoyed the movie and I think many intelligent decisions were made in converting the book into a movie. I understand that cuts are necessary due to money and time restrictions. So far, the movies seem well-casted and I look forward to more.
On to the Chamber of Secrets!

d*mbledore groomed remus the same way that he groomed h*rry. offered him an education and normalcy and safety via hogwarts in order to use him later to fight a war. d*mbledore foresaw voldemort’s rise, and was like oh well i guess it would be useful to have a werewolf on our side... so he sent remus to hogwarts to ensure that he would be forever in his debt and thus useful and exploitable

“I was in the bathtub. My dad came in and said, “Guess who they want to play Harry Potter?” I think I said the name of another actor, because I was sure it wasn’t me. Then he said, “No, it’s you”, and I started to cry with joy. That night, I woke up at 2 in the morning and woke up mom and dad and asked, “Am I dreaming? Will I really play Harry Potter?” - Daniel Radcliffe
